And the reason is this: Because it's dang hard.

What do you do when your identity of 36 years vanishes? How do you tell someone who you are when everything you are used to be summed up in one word: Mormon.

You pick up pieces slowly, like a tornado victim sorting through the rubble of their vanquished homestead. You figure out what treasures and dreams and hopes are salvageable - for me, that's my family, the solace found in mountains and trees, and my quest to build a gentle community.

I'm still in shock. I'm trying to hold down the homestead, beaten down though it may be. I'm trying to revive the old me, to remember and rekindle interests and endeavors that I laid on the alter of sacrifice long ago.

I'm discovering anew that life is beautiful, but more like a beautiful wreck. Right now it seems lonely, but I imagine there are others like me in the wake of this tornado, and will be many yet whose lives will be devastated by the aftermath of a crisis of faith. I hope we can find each other. Here's me waving and sending much love your way.
